Croatia joining EU membership with referendum
The recent referendum in Croatia indicates that large majority of people want to join the EU as they want to end fascism. Since 1991, the collapse of communism system, strong fascism has been dominant in this country as the end of Croatian War of Independence in 1995.
Since the early 1990s, the country has been dramatically grown as the GDP indicates that increase. Despite that, the foreign direct investment declined after the Lehman Shock, in which it is almost 1/6 of what it used to be before 2008 with $6B compared to $1B in 2010. At this moment, what Croatia needs is financial support from EU as well as the stability of market capitalisation backed up by them, even though the EU is still struggling with a massive monetary rescue for Greece and other PIIGS countries. As the prime minister of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic said in an interview with BBC that 'there are wide range of reasons joining the EU'. It seems that his presumption is still fragile and vague that Croatia is still suffering from financial crisis and a slight impact from Greece crisis, though the prime minister declared they are well prepared to assess the criteria.
I do not see the advantages for current EU members when Croatia joins because this country has scarse financial products and less valued of agricultural products, then what would they bring? The expansion of EU membership is not always a good idea unless each member should have burden and take responsibility for country's debts and economic stability. Furthermore, those former Yugoslavian countries still have to make a response for the war in 1995 and if the EU approves their joining, their war responsibility will be never discussed and solved. Deep consideration needs for the EU even though a massive yes referendum shows as Croatian poll.
